Responsibility for national programmes
As of 2013, national vaccination programmes are regulated by the Communicable Diseases Act.
Many stakeholders contribute to maintaining the vaccination programmes:
The Government
The Government decides which diseases to include in the programmes.
The Public Health Agency of Sweden
The Public Health Agency of Sweden is responsible for providing the government with suggestions for changes together with supporting documentation, and for implementing the government's decisions. This is done through regulations defining target groups, number of doses, timing, etc. The Agency is also responsible for the national vaccination registry and monitors the vaccination coverage and the effect of vaccinations included in national vaccination programmes.
In addition, the Agency can produce recommendations for vaccinations to complement national vaccination programmes.
The Medical Products Agency
The Medical Products Agency is responsible for monitoring vaccine safety and reviewing reports of adverse reactions.
The regions
The regionsare responsible for procuring vaccines and planning the implementation of the vaccination programmes.
