Recommendations for travellers due to the spread of mpox
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. Therefore, the Public Health Agency of Sweden has issued recommendations for travellers to and from areas where there is an ongoing spread of mpox.

If you have been in an area with an ongoing spread of mpox, pay attention to clear symptoms of mpox such as painful blisters and sores. Watch for symptoms for three weeks after you return home. Call telephone number 1177 if you develop clear symptoms.
- If you have been in close contact with a person with possible or known mpox infection, call telephone number 1177 for counselling, regardless of whether you have symptoms or not and regardless of your destination.
Travellers to areas where there is an outbreak
- Follow the advice of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs before travelling.
- Find out if there is an ongoing spread of mpox in the area you are travelling to.
- Follow the local directions of the country you are travelling to on how to act if you develop clear symptoms of mpox such as painful blisters and sores. Keep in mind that if you have developed symptoms of mpox or any other infecious disease while abroad, the rules of the country you are in may prevent you from travelling home until you are no longer considered likely to infect others.
- If you are in an area with ongoing spread of mpox, avoid close contacts such as close skin-to-skin contact.
- Avoid new sexual contacts in particular, if you are in an area with ongoing transmission.
- Contact your healthcare provider if you develop clear symptoms of mpox, such as painful blisters and sores, while travelling or staying in an area where mpox is spreading.

- Find out if you are covered by the Public Health Agency of Sweden’s recommendations for vaccination against mpox.
