Research and Innovation

Antibiotic resistance is a priority research issue in Sweden. The National Research Programme on Antibiotic Resistance has a broad, interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral perspective and includes both basic and applied research.

The research program initiates and funds research within all aspects of One health in collaboration with national public funding agencies and other stakeholders. The programme is led by the Swedish Research Council and research priorities are defined in a national strategic research agenda. This agenda includes the thematic areas of transmission, infection prevention, environment, surveillance and diagnostics, as well as development of new antibiotics, vaccines and alternatives to antibiotics.

The Swedish Research Council also hosts the international secretariat of the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) and is coordinating the preparation of the forthcoming European Partnership on One Health AMR.

Sweden funds international research and innovation collaborations through the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and Sweden’s Innovation Agency.

Many public and private organisations in Sweden also participate in international projects funded by grants from calls by different international public or private-public funders.

The AMR Studio is a podcast dedicated to highlighting the multidisciplinary research on antimicrobial resistance that is happening around the world. Formatted around interviews with professionals working in all aspects of the topic, the podcast aims to bring the global and multidisciplinary nature of the fight against antimicrobial and antibiotic resistance to anyone with an interest.

The podcast studio is hosted by Uppsala University and its dedicated Uppsala Antibiotic Centre, which brings together researchers to stimulate and support important research on antibiotic resistance from all three disciplinary domains at Uppsala University: Medicine and Pharmacy, Science and Technology, and Humanities and Social Sciences.

Umeå University has a long tradition of research within the field of antimicrobial resistance including basic research that aims to understand the virulence mechanisms of microorganisms and the interaction between the host and microorganisms. More applied research is also conducted that seeks new solutions to combat the problem, for example through the development of new molecules that are effective against resistant bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. UCMR is a centre promoting interdisciplinary cutting-edge molecular and translational microbial infection research at Umeå University. UCMR was founded in 2004 and was appointed Centre of Excellence 2008-2018. Today, the science environment comprises 72 research groups with outstanding track records in the fields of microbial pathogenesis, molecular and cell biology, chemistry, clinical microbiology, structural biology, immunology, epidemiology, microbial ecology, physics, mathematics, and data-driven science.
