Municipality governance
Municipalities in Sweden govern several public sector services including long-term care, water & wastewater management, schools and preschools. The Antibiotic Smart criteria for municipality governance highlight important areas of engagement for local leaders.
Municipality leadership has a key role in ensuring the mandate to work with antibiotic resistance at different levels in the community. They can ensure the question is prioritised at a political level. Municipality leadership can also help raise awareness, provide opportunities and support commitment to work with antibiotic resistance across several public sector services and towards the public. They can also directly influence overarching processes within municipalities, including certain procurement processes. In total there are seven criteria.
Example criteria:
Formal decision
- The municipality describes in steering documents that they are working to become an antibiotic-smart municipality.
Coordination & organisation
- The municipality has appointed a representative with clear and defined responsibilities to coordinate the work with Antibiotic Smart Sweden within the municipality.
Measurements & follow-up
- The municipality monitors, through a relevant existing framework, the collective work within the municipality to become antibiotic-smart
Communication and Awareness
- The municipality has an annual awareness campaign for its residents about the work to prevent and limit spread of infections and antibiotic resistance, and how people themselves can act and contribute.
